You may have read in the news today that some of the nation’s most politically influential conservatives are considering backing a 3rd party candidate for the Presidency. According to the Associated Press this group convened over the weekend to discuss backing Richard Viguerie. Having never heard of him before, I decided to do a little research.
According to Wikipedia, Viguerie has been involved in politics in one form or another for a few decades, including seeking a nomination to oppose President Ford in 1976. When not directly involved in the political process, he has rallied Americans around conservative causes through his advertising firm. He is the self proclaimed pioneer of direct mail. He has also writen two books (Conservatives Betrayed & America’s Right Turn). Viguerie is currently the chairman of ConservativeHQ as well as Conservatives Betrayed, and is one of the co-founders of the American Freedom Agenda.

I’m still not sure if I’d vote for him, but it seems unlikely that he would get to that point. Independents in America usually don’t go far.
