Bush’s War

My Tivo recorded the Frontline series on the war in Iraq last week. I watched the first episode last night. The series makes the argument that Bush’s administration colluded and distorted facts to garner American support for war in Iraq. I’m not close enough to the administration to comment on the validity of the claim, but I will say that Frontline presents a compelling argument. If they’re right, holy cow is that awful.

Vermont Town Wants To Arrest Bush

This isn’t exactly new, but it is worth repeating. Last week voters in the Vermont towns of Battleboro and Marlboro passed articles calling for President Bush and Vice President Cheney to be arrested for violating the constitution. This follows several non-binding resolutions to end the war in Iraq and impeach Bush and Cheney.

California’s Secession Letter to Bush

Someone over at Democracy Means You published an open letter to Dubya suggesting that the liberal state would like to secede from the union. Though its a few years old, I hadn’t seen it before. Its a bit biting, a bit fun, and liberal to the core.

Bush Wants Expansion of Powers To Be Permanent

Last month president Bush expanded the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. It was a fast modification to account for advances in technology. Today Bush announced that national security professionals are dependent on these laws to be effective in their jobs.

When the Protect America Act, as its called, was passed Congress set it to expire in six months so that it could be fine tuned. In his announcement Bush said “Without these tools, our country will be much more vulnerable to attack,” and “The threat from al Qaida is not going to expire in 135 days, so I call on Congress to make the Protect America Act permanent.”

Federal Judge Strikes Down Part of Patriot Act

U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero struck down a primary piece of the Patriot Act on Thursday. He said when “the judiciary lowers its guard on the Constitution, it opens the door to far-reaching invasions of liberty,” referring to the FBI’s ability to demand records without the kind of court supervision required for other government searches. Regarding the national security letters, he said, Congress crossed its boundaries so dramatically that to let the law stand might turn an innocent legislative step into “the legislative equivalent of breaking and entering, with an ominous free pass to the hijacking of constitutional values.” This new ruling ruling does not mean the FBI must obtain the approval of a court prior to ordering records be turned over, but rather must justify to a court the need for secrecy if the orders will last longer than a reasonable and brief period of time.

Obama Concedes Bush Not Solely to Blame

While giving a speech to a packed crowd in Iowa, Senator Obama made the statement “Part of the problem here is not just George Bush and the White House”. He went on to say that average Americans must be involved in decisions about issues from health care to education to trade. Obama’s solution is to post all non-emergency bills online for five days before signing them into law, which would allow Americans to have input on the legislation.

President Bush Asking for More Power

The ACLU just put out an article stating that President Bush is asking to expand the power granted within the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to account for advances in technology. ACLU representative Caroline Fredrickson states that

“Hidden in this bill is a disturbing provision that would give complete immunity - from criminal prosecution as well as civil liability - for the telecom companies
