Iowa Mayhem

The primaries started with a bang, didn’t they? Huckabee winning the Republican side isn’t too surprising, but beating Romney by eleven points is. Iowa was Romney’s strategy, win big early and build from there. The other candidates have already been spending time in the other primary states, so Romney is now playing catch up. This early upset can’t be good for him.

GOP Update: Giuliani Still Leading, Thompson Second

The Gallup Poll released the latest GOP standings yesterday. Mayor Rudy Giuliani continues to lead with the recently announced Fred Thompson trailing by 8 points. Senator John McCain is now ahead of Mitt Romney. One thing of note, I’m seeing a lot of interest in Ron Paul both online and in my community (Texas), but he’s tied with Mike Huckabee at only 4% in the polls.

I’ll be curious to see if Paul is able to convert all of his recent media attention to a bump in the polls in the coming weeks. Props to Fred Thompson for making a strong entry into the Presidential race. With so many candidates running for one nomination spot, its amazing that he’s already in the number two spot after a couple of (official) weeks.

Thompson Officially Announces Presidential Bid

Earlier this week Fred Thompson officially announced his bid for the Republican Presidential candidacy on The Tonight Show. This comes as no surprise, he’s been doing unofficial campaign work for the past several months. Since his announcement he has posted a video to YouTube with his announcement, and has garnered the backing of no less than 20 current Senators. That’s quite a start! Thompson’s official campaign site is www.fred08.com.

Thompson Will Announce Next Week

Earlier today Fred Thompson said that he would formally launch his bid in the 2008 Presidential race. He’ll start with a tour of the early voting states to get his name out. Thompson has apparently delayed the formal announcement to test the waters until he had some confidence in his position. Bill Lacy, Thompson’s campaign manager said, “Fred is consistently near the top in the polls, and conservatives across the country have put together the closest thing to a draft in recent presidential campaign history in an effort to bring about this day.”

Thompson Expected to Announce in Sept

Former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson has still not yet announced his bid for the presidential race, though he is building an organization and raising funds. Though he is currently unannounced he is the number two Republican candidate in the most recent polls, and is well known for his role in NBC’s Law & Order. His high name recognition makes him an attractive candidate to undecided conservatives, though there are currently eight Republican candidates in the race. Analysts predict that he’ll make his candidacy official during the month of September.
